Stress and Executive Function

Stress and Executive Function

Stress does more than affect mood — it can directly impact executive function skills such as planning, organization, attention, and decision-making. For many people with Spina Bifida, stress may intensify challenges in these areas, especially during school transitions, changes in health, or periods of increased responsibility.

The Spina Bifida Association’s Mental Health Guideline highlights that mental health, resilience, family support, and social participation all play a critical role in quality of life and independence. When stress goes unaddressed, it can reduce executive functioning and increase risks for anxiety and depression — but with early identification, consistent support, and coordinated care, outcomes improve across the lifespan.

Reducing stress is not just emotional support — it is essential to health, self-management, and long-term independence.
