What You Can Do to Protect Skin Health
Skin-related issues can have a major impact on health, independence, daily routines, and overall quality of life for people with Spina Bifida. That is why prevention and early awareness are so important.
The Spina Bifida Association’s Integument Guideline highlights several ways to help protect skin health, including:
• Daily skin checks for changes in color, texture, or temperature
• Watching for heat, moisture, and pressure on insensate areas
• Keeping skin clean and dry
• Checking water temperature before bathing
• Looking out for hot surfaces like car seats or playground equipment
• Using pressure-relieving activities and proper protective equipment when needed
Healthy skin habits can begin early in life and continue into adulthood. Building awareness and routines can help reduce the risk of skin breakdown and support long-term health outcomes.
