Voices of the Spina Bifida Community: Ny’Ashia’s Story

For Ny’Ashia, the Walk-N-Roll is a place to meet new families, reconnect with others, and spend time with people who understand life with Spina Bifida.

Ny’Ashia and her family first attended a Walk-N-Roll in 2014, where they connected with the Spina Bifida community and discovered resources that have remained meaningful to them.

Today, Ny’Ashia is a recent high school graduate preparing to begin college this fall. During her high school track and field career, she became a three-time New York State champion and held state records in the 50-meter dash and shot put. Outside of athletics, she enjoys baking, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.

One of the biggest challenges Ny’Ashia experiences living with Spina Bifida is accessibility. From beaches to carnival rides and other everyday activities, inaccessible spaces can create barriers that require extra planning and problem-solving.

“Having more things accessible would make the greatest difference.”

Ny’Ashia believes the Syracuse Walk-N-Roll is important because it gives more individuals and families the opportunity to find community, support, and resources.

“There are so many families and individuals living with Spina Bifida who have no idea about the great resources SBANYS has to offer.”
