Mental Health in Spina Bifida: Understanding the Whole Picture
Mental health is multi-layered.
For individuals with Spina Bifida, mental health is shaped by many connected factors that work together to influence overall well-being and quality of life.
These include:
- Neuropsychological functioning, such as attention, learning, and executive function
- Family enviornment, including support, stress, and relationships
- Social development, including friendships, social skills, and connection
- Culture, which can shape experiences, expectations, and access to support
- Quality of life, including participation in daily activities and independence
Each of these areas plays a role in how individuals think, feel, and interact with the world.
Understanding mental health as a whole picture helps us provide better, more effective support across the lifespan.
