Supporting Growth and Independence for People with Spina Bifida
Growing up with Spina Bifida means reaching many milestones along the way.
The Spina Bifida Association’s Family Functioning Guideline encourages families to receive anticipatory guidance throughout childhood, adolescence, and adulthood to help prepare for changing developmental needs and responsibilities.
This guidance may include:
• Understanding developmental milestones at different ages
• Preparing for greater independence and self-management over time
• Navigating school transitions and educational supports
• Discussing future goals related to employment, community participation, and adult healthcare
• Adapting family roles and expectations as children grow
Planning ahead can help families feel more confident and prepared for each stage of life.
