Voices of the Spina Bifida Community: Josh’s Story

Disability Pride Month is a time to celebrate disabled leaders breaking barriers in every space.

Today, we are proud to spotlight Josh Turek, a member of the Spina Bifida community whose story shows the power of representation, access, and leadership.

Josh was born with Spina Bifida and went through 21 surgeries by the age of 12. He went on to become a four-time Paralympian, two-time Paralympic gold medalist, professional wheelchair basketball player, and National Wheelchair Basketball Association Hall of Fame inductee.

Now, Josh continues to make history in public service. His recent Democratic primary win in Iowa is another reminder that disability representation matters at every level of leadership.

His story reminds us that people with Spina Bifida belong everywhere, including on the basketball court, in government, in advocacy, and in the rooms where decisions are made.
