Voices of the Spina Bifida Community: Thomas’ Story
Meet Thomas
In honor of National Get Caught Reading Month, we’re highlighting an author in our community. Thomas is 54 years old and lives in Rochester, New York. He is an author and a man living with Spina Bifida who believes that no matter the situation, there is always a way forward.
From the very beginning, Thomas’s journey was filled with challenges. At birth, his parents were told not to get attached, as he might not survive. But instead of accepting that outcome, they chose to fight for him, seeking out life-saving care and setting the foundation for the resilience that would shape his life.
Over the years, Thomas has faced many obstacles, making it difficult to point to just one defining challenge. Instead, it is his lifelong perseverance that stands out most. One of his proudest accomplishments is writing his book, Beyond the Bridge: Ten Steps to Living with a Disability, where he reflects on the lessons he has learned throughout his journey.
Living with Spina Bifida has shaped Thomas into someone who approaches life with determination, perspective, and humor. He believes that even in difficult moments, there is always a path forward.
Those who know Thomas would describe him as funny, engaging, and someone who can strike up a conversation with anyone. His sense of humor and ability to connect with others are at the heart of who he is.
His story is a reminder that strength can be built over a lifetime, and that perseverance, mindset, and support can make all the difference.
