What Caregivers Can Do to Support Skin Health
Helping someone with Spina Bifida check their skin regularly can prevent small problems from becoming bigger.
Caregivers play a key role in helping people with Spina Bifida maintain healthy skin. Regular checks can catch subtle changes early, especially in areas with reduced or absent sensation. Consistent monitoring supports long-term skin health and helps prevent pressure injuries.
Some ways caregivers can help include:
• Checking insensate and weight-bearing areas daily
• Teaching and encouraging the individual to participate in skin checks
• Monitoring for changes in color, texture, temperature, or moisture
• Ensuring braces, orthoses, and equipment fit properly
• Keeping skin clean and dry, and using barrier creams when needed
• Helping establish routines that make skin checks part of daily life
These practices can empower both caregivers and individuals with Spina Bifida to take proactive steps in protecting skin health.
