Aging with Spina Bifida: What Older Adults Should Know

For older adults living with Spina Bifida, aging can bring changes in health, mobility, strength, and everyday routines. Some areas to pay attention to as you get older include:

• Staying active and maintaining muscle strength
• Protecting bone health and screening for osteoporosis
• Preserving mobility with physical therapy, braces, orthotics, or mobility equipment when needed
• Watching for changes in skin health and preventing pressure injuries
• Keeping up with recommended health screenings
• Managing changes in bowel and bladder health
• Paying attention to mental health and overall well-being
• Planning ahead for future healthcare, caregiving, and support needs

Most importantly, changes should not automatically be dismissed as a normal part of getting older. New or changing concerns should be discussed with a healthcare provider who can determine what may be related to aging, Spina Bifida, or another health condition.
