How Spina Bifida Affects the Body: From Mobility to Daily Functions

How does Spina Bifida affect the body?

In individuals with Myelomeningocele, the level of nerve involvement along the spine can impact how muscles and nerves function throughout the body. This can influence mobility, strength, sensation, and even daily activities like bowel and bladder care.

Mobility looks different for everyone. Some people walk independently, others use braces, crutches, or wheelchairs. The neurologic level of the lesion often helps guide what mobility may look like over time.

Mobility is about more than movement. It supports:

  • Physical health and strength
  • Bone density and circulation
  • Participation in school, work, and community
  • Independence with daily activities
  • Pressure relief and skin health

With the right supports, therapy, and mobility devices, people with Spina Bifida can stay active and engaged across every stage of life.
