Latex Allergy
Spina Bifida & Latex Allergy — Stay Safe from the Start
People with Spina Bifida are at high risk for latex allergy due to frequent medical procedures and long-term exposure from birth. Latex allergy occurs when the body reacts to proteins in natural rubber latex — and reactions can range from mild skin irritation to life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Common signs of latex allergy include:
- Itchy skin, rash, or hives
- Sneezing, runny nose, or itchy eyes
- Coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath
- Swelling of lips, tongue, or throat (medical emergency)
Prevention is key:
- Avoid contact with natural latex products from birth whenever possible
- Use non-latex alternatives like silicone, nitrile, vinyl, or plastic
- For those with known allergy, carry epinephrine and non-latex medical supplies
- Wear a medical alert bracelet and share your action plan with caregivers, schools, and healthcare providers
Early awareness, careful avoidance, and emergency preparedness help keep people with Spina Bifida safe.
