Emergency Planning
People with disabilities, including those with Spina Bifida, are often overlooked in emergency planning. Without accessible shelters, transportation, and support, they face higher risks during disasters. That’s why planning must include everyone.
New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services recommends taking these steps:
- Personal Support Network: Identify at least three trusted people at home, school, work, or other locations who can help quickly. Teach them how to operate your assistive devices.
- Emergency Supplies & Backup Equipment: Store mobility aids, medical devices, batteries, medications, personal care items, and service animal supplies in multiple locations.
- Transportation & Evacuation Plans: Coordinate with accessible transportation, local emergency officials, and Paratransit. Know evacuation routes and shelter locations.
- Power-Dependent Devices: Contact utilities for priority reconnection and have backup power for life-support devices like oxygen or dialysis.
- Emergency Alerts: Sign up for NY-Alert, Wireless Emergency Alerts, and other accessible systems to stay informed during crises.
Including people with disabilities in emergency planning saves lives, protects independence, and ensures everyone can get the help they need when disaster strikes.
