The Three Types of Spina Bifida: What’s the Difference?

Did you know there are three different types of Spina Bifida?

Myelomeningocele – A sac of fluid is visible on the baby’s back. The spinal cord and/or nerves are involved, which often causes nerve damage. This can affect mobility, bladder and bowel function, and overall physical abilities.

Meningocele – A sac of fluid is also present, but the spinal cord and nerves do not protrude into the sac. Some physical effects may still occur, but it is typically less severe than Myelomeningocele.

Occulta – The mildest form. It leaves a small gap in the spine and often causes no symptoms. Many people don’t know they have it unless it’s found later during unrelated testing.

While these are the three types, no two individuals experience Spina Bifida the same way.

Understanding the differences helps us better support individuals and families impacted by Spina Bifida.
