Spina Bifida Occulta: the Hidden Form of Spina Bifida

Spina Bifida Occulta: the Hidden Form of Spina Bifida

Many have it and don’t know: Spina Bifida Occulta

Spina Bifida Occulta means “hidden split spine.” In Spina Bifida Occulta, the bony covering of the spine does not fully close, but the spinal cord and nerves are usually normal. There is no sac or opening, and the spine looks normal from the outside.

About 10 percent of adults have Spina Bifida Occulta, and most never know it unless an X-ray or scan reveals one or more bones that look different. Most children with Spina Bifida Occulta on imaging will see the spine close naturally as they grow.

Although Spina Bifida Occulta usually does not cause problems, some forms can affect the spine or nerves. Symptoms may include:

  • Pain radiating into one or both legs
  • Weakness in one or both legs
  • Numbness or changes in feeling in the legs or back
  • Balance difficulties
  • Changes in bowl or bladder function
  • Abnormalities of foot alignment
  • Skin changes on the lower back such as a hairy patch, fatty lump, birthmark, or deep dimple

Anyone experiencing these signs should see a healthcare provider immediately.
