Voices of the Spina Bifida Community: Lisa’s Story
Meet Lisa
Lisa is 60 years old and lives in Ronkonkoma, New York. She describes herself as outgoing, empathetic, and compassionate, qualities that are reflected in her commitment to supporting the Spina Bifida community.
One challenge Lisa is especially proud of overcoming was learning to drive. Reaching that milestone gave her greater independence and reinforced the mindset she carries with her every day: an “I can do” attitude.
Lisa also wants people to understand an important truth about living with Spina Bifida. It is not one-size-fits-all. Every person’s experience is different, and each individual faces their own unique challenges and successes.
Among her many accomplishments, Lisa is proud of graduating college with a Bachelor of Science in Education and working at her job for 34 years before retiring.
Through her involvement with the Walk-N-Roll Committee, Lisa helps plan and support SBANYS’ most popular annual community event. The Walk-N-Roll brings families and supporters together for a one-mile walk, while also featuring raffles, contests, merchandise, picnic food and beverages, vendors, and entertainment. Most importantly, it raises critical funds that support programs and services for the more than 4,000 New Yorkers living with Spina Bifida.
Lisa also hopes to see more in-person events in downstate New York where individuals and families can connect and support one another.
You can join Lisa and the community at the Long Island Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida:
Sunday, May 17
10 AM to 2 PM
Eisenhower Park, East Meadow, NY
Enter via Merrick Road (200 Merrick Ave.), Parking Lot 1, Sycamore Pavilion, to the right of the ice rink.
We’re aiming to raise $55,000 this year to support programs and services for New Yorkers living with Spina Bifida. Every donation brings us closer to that goal. Join Lisa and our community by registering, starting a fundraising team, donating, or attending the Long Island Walk-N-Roll on May 17. Together, we can make a real difference!
