Taking Charge of Weight & Health: Spina Bifida & Obesity
Obesity can make daily life harder for people with Spina Bifida, from moving independently to caring for skin health. Children with Spina Bifida, especially those who also have hydrocephalus, have a very high risk of becoming overweight or obese. After age six, at least 50% of children with Spina Bifida are overweight, and in adolescence and adulthood, over 50% are obese.
But small, manageable steps can make a big difference:
- Eat balanced, nutritious meals
- Stay active in ways that work for your abilities
- Involve your family and caregivers in healthy habits
- Focus on progress and consistency, not perfection
Every positive change counts toward lifelong health and independence.
